SGS Achieves IHM Certificate

SGS is proud to announce that is has recently been certified to deliver Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) services. With this certificate, SGS can respond to the growing importance of a safe and healthy working environment on board ships.

A safe and healthy living and working environment is vital for a productive, compliant maritime operation. Onboard health and safety is coming under increasing scrutiny from national, European and global laws and regulations, including present and proposed implementations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Vessel General Permit (VGP). This places increased demands on maritime operators, to identify all hazardous materials on board a ship.

Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM)

Worldwide, all seagoing vessels are required to be in possession of an IHM by 2021. This means that for all new and existing ships of more than 500 tons, an extensive inventory must be made of hazardous materials and substances on board. Think of, for example, PCBs, lead-based paint, asbestos and chromium-6. An IHM report is maintained and supplemented throughout the entire life cycle of a ship: from building to becoming operational. Finally, an IHM ensures that a ship can be dismantled safely, with reduced risks to people and the environment.

An expanded range of services

By obtaining the IHM certificate, SGS expands its service package focused on the maritime sector. As the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, we can support the maritime sector across the full spectrum of environmental, safety and health related shipping issues.
