Asbestos inventory, sampling, and final inspection
Asbestos is a hazardous material because its strong fibers can break into tiny particles that are invisible to the naked eye. These particles are so small that they can be inhaled deeply into the lungs. Once lodged in the lungs, they can potentially cause cancer over time. In the Netherlands, approximately 500 people die from asbestos-related cancer each year.
SGS Search has been specializing in asbestos research and advice for over 25 years. Asbestos presence investigations are conducted by SGS Search Ingenieursbureau, while asbestos analyses and final inspections are handled by SGS Search Laboratory. Asbestos Inventory
If you are renovating, refurbishing, or demolishing a building constructed before 1994, an asbestos inventory is required by Dutch law. Additionally, if you want to understand the risks associated with potential asbestos in your property, an asbestos inventory provides valuable insight. SGS Search holds a process certificate for asbestos surveying.
Desk Research and On-Site Inspection
An asbestos inventory generally consists of desk research and an on-site inspection by a certified asbestos inventory expert (DIA). The extent of the on-site inspection depends on the planned activities. If you are renovating or demolishing, the DIA must also search for asbestos that is not immediately visible.
Sampling
During the asbestos inventory, suspected asbestos-containing materials that are not immediately visible are sampled. These samples are analyzed in our laboratory, and the findings are reported in the asbestos inventory report. This report is required for obtaining a demolition permit or notification if asbestos needs to be removed.
Asbestos Analysis
Determining the presence of asbestos requires analysis by an accredited laboratory. SGS Search analysts conduct the analysis according to NEN 5896 and provide an official analysis report.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
For assessing asbestos contamination or conducting more advanced investigations of suspected asbestos materials sampled during the inventory, our laboratory uses a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with magnification up to 100,000 times.
Final Inspection
After asbestos remediation, an independent final inspection is often required. During this inspection, the analyst assesses whether the remediation has been completed thoroughly and whether the work area is safe to re-enter. If so, the remover receives a clearance report.

SGS Search Laboratorium B.V is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA) as an inspection body for the activities as recorded in I137 and as a test laboratory for the activities as recorded in L238 (testing).
