Asbestos in soil, rubble, and dredged material

The legacy of asbestos use is evident not only in buildings but also in the soil. When rubble is found in the ground, the location is automatically considered to be suspect for asbestos contamination. Comprehensive soil asbestos testing must determine whether the soil is contaminated with asbestos. The experts at SGS Search specialize in asbestos research in soil and provide clear insights into the facts—expertly, independently, flexibly, and swiftly.

Historical and field research

An investigation into asbestos in soil, rubble, and dredged material determines whether asbestos-containing materials are present. If so, it assesses the extent of the contamination and whether there are risks for current or future use.

The first step is an preliminary site investigation based on historical data, which forms the basis for the investigation plan. This step is followed by fieldwork:

  • Historical research: the objective is to determine whether a site is suspected of being contaminated with asbestos. We use available information about the location, such as past activities that may have caused contamination or the (former) presence of asbestos-containing applications (for example, asbestos cement corrugated roofing).

  • Field research: based on the historical research, an investigation plan is prepared for the fieldwork. This includes a visual inspection combined with the collection and analysis of representative samples in the field.

In accordance with standards

Our experts conduct investigations into asbestos in soil, rubble, and dredged material in accordance with applicable standards: NEN 5707 (asbestos in soil), NEN 5720 (asbestos in aquatic sediments), and NEN 5897 (asbestos in rubble).

Analysis, interpretation, and advice

Sample analysis is carried out in SGS’s accredited laboratory. The analyst determines the asbestos concentration and type present in the sample and records the results in an analysis certificate. These are then reviewed and interpreted by SGS Search experts.

Our experts translate the findings into a final conclusion of the investigation and advise on any additional measures that may be required. If remediation is necessary, we can also provide (environmental) supervision during the remediation works.
